4 tips for tackling summer breakouts

With the arrival of Summer, we usually relish the longer days and rising temperatures, yet there can be a downside to this change in season. For many of us it’s the beginning of a tiresome battle against breakouts and oiliness. Humidity mixed with the increase in sweat can lead to blocked pores and excess sebum. Bacteria can then build up and result in acne and breakouts. Ultimately putting a real dampener on our sunny mood! Here we share some tips on how to keep breakouts at bay so you can concentrate on having fun in the sun.

Cleanse thoroughly

During warmer weather we tend to sweat more both during the day and overnight, so it’s important we are cleansing AM and PM. Ideally you want to use something that’s deep cleansing yet gentle on your skin barrier. For existing breakouts our summer staple is the Bamboo Charcoal Facial Sponge which helps eradicate bacteria and absorb excess sebum. As a preventative cleanse we love our French Green Clay Facial Sponge which helps keep oil and congestion to a minimum.

Swap to hydrating lightweight layers

This is the time to switch to water-based products with humectants, these are a group of ingredients that draw moisture into your skin and they will hydrate the skin without overloading it or causing clogged pores. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe vera which will actually help counteract oiliness and balance the complexion. Oily skin tends to be dehydrated and can over produce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture in the skin. We constantly recommend Flow Cosmetics Hyaluron & Probiotic Deep Moisture Serum which deeply hydrates but absorbs quickly. It also offers antioxidant protection and cares for the skin barrier. We find layering this under SPF in the summer is enough for us.

Incorporate salicylic acid

When in the midst of a breakout salicylic acid is your knight in shining armour. It works on both a surface level and deep inside the pores to break down oil, clear congestion and regulate your skin, getting it back on track. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce redness. The key thing is to not overdo it, just a few times a week is a good balance. We love Flow Cosmetics 3 in 1 Detox Mask which is fantastic as a cleanser or weekly treatment. Not only does it contain white willow bark which is a natural source of salicylates but it also contains raw honey which is a fantastic antibacterial ingredient for preventing breakouts and healing skin in the process.

Consider mineral makeup

Changing up your makeup routine may prove beneficial to help prevent breakouts. Mineral makeup is known for being a better choice for acne prone skin and during the warmer months it can feel more comfortable as it is lightweight and breathable. It also tends to be free from oil, wax and other potential pore clogging ingredients. We recommend Korento Perfecting Mineral Base which is a finely milled formula that feels comfortable on the skin and leaves a velvety finish. Containing light reflecting pigments this will provide a natural glow whilst diffusing blemishes and evening out skin tone and redness. Other great brands to look at are BareMinerals, Jane Iredale and Annabelle Minerals.

Also, as a last tip, remember to avoid touching your face which can spread bacteria and grime around! We hope these quick tips have given you food for thought, summer breakouts needn’t be a worry if you know how to tackle clogged pores and care for your skin.
